Down below, moving out of the pure darkness, were people. All women. Their hair matted and eyes wild, their wrists bound.

A mixture of panic and hope rose in their features as they looked up at me from their prison. Some began sobbing, their cries muffled behind tear-soaked gags. My mind reeled, trying to find any justification for what I’d stumbled upon. There was no logic to it. Had an enemy ship gotten through our wards? That was impossible. I eyed the darkness around me, then ran to the railing to scan the street below. Still empty.

I rushed back to peer down at their anguished expressions. The likes of which I’d only seen once before. Many years ago. A memory that I’d tried and failed to forget.

I would never hesitate to act again. I couldn’t leave them there.
